Imo: Police seal Zenith bank branches over ex-deputy gov’s benefits

Police on Thursday closed all Zenith Bank branches in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

Our reporter who was on the lookout for what was happening saw the police seizing the gates of all the bank branches as staff and customers patrolled.

The officers, who looked strong, said they were using the court’s decision against the bank.

When questioned, bank employees who did not want to be identified told our reporter that the police were issuing a court order against the bank and the Imo State government.

He said the Owerri National Industrial Court had issued a full bank order in the case of former Imo deputy governor Eze Madumere over his rights.

Officials said “the police are applying the full order of the Zenith bank in a case filed by the former deputy governor of the Imo region, Prince Eze Madumere against the Imo regional government over his rights to the state government.

“The order is about a request for N1.9bn and the police have come to apply for a court order. The court ordered our bank (Zenith) Imo state government to close down here until a decision is made. ”

Contacted by the Information and Strategy Commissioner, Declan Emelumba, he said the decision was made by mistake.

The commissioner said, “the judge who made the decision did so in a way that met with the people against the Imo Regional Government. How could the judge overturn the decision and prevent the defendants from appealing the case and giving it 24 hours to begin the verdict.

“I think there is some interest. We are exploring other legal options to issue an order. The decision cannot represent a serious legal review anywhere. It is a kangaroo judgment. All rights of the former deputy mayor do not exceed N200m. Therefore, I wonder why the judge will order the payment of a counterfeit amount.

“There are police in Imo province but they went to fetch 9 zone police from Umuahia. No one can threaten the government. We can’t believe it. We must do the right thing for the benefit of the people of the Imo region. ”

Zenith Bank spokeswoman Ayoola Kusimo did not return calls and did not respond to a text message
