Abuja second runway ready in 12 Months – Aviation minister

The Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, said the second runway at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja would be ready before the end of this 11- to 12-month term.

He said this while presenting a residence permit for the extension of the airport in Abuja and other aviation facilities within the Abuja airport.

A residence permit was issued to the Minister of Aviation on Friday by Federal Capital Territory Minister Mohammed Bello.

Speaking at the event, the aviation minister said the expansion of Abuja as one of the fastest growing cities in the world necessitated the expansion of Abuja International Airport, the construction of a second airport and the establishment of major airports.

He said all structures would be implemented in accordance with the Abuja master plan in collaboration with the FCT team.

He also said that apart from the runway, other major facilities would be completed during the remainder of the term.

Speaking earlier, the FCT minister said the total land allocated to the project was estimated at 12,000 hectares.

He called on the Minister of Aviation to ensure proper supervision and co-operation between FCT and engineers and staff so that all structures and buildings would follow the proper process of Abuja’s master plan.

The FCT minister is committed to working with the aviation department to achieve a road map.
