2023: APC Govs start Rallying around Osinbajo

Two days after President Muhammadu Buhari unveiled a statue of his successor at the next APC Presidential Primaries, ruling party leaders began gathering after Deputy President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo.

As last night several APC governors appeared in a Villa and VP meeting on what sources say could lead to the Consensus president of the ruling party.

Rulers at the All Progressives Congress (APC), under the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), appeared to agree on the appointment of Deputy President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, ahead of the long-awaited presidential election. June 6th.

The governors who held a series of meetings at the Kebbi State Governors Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja on May 31, after their meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, initially became obsolete with the consensus process.

However, after the reunion, a leading source said that the governors had agreed that the party’s Presidency should be divided into the South and that the candidate should be Prof Osinbajo.

According to a reliable source in Villa, the governors failed to reach an agreement on who to run for office at their first meeting because different governors worked for different beneficiaries and all demanded that those who wanted a separate North-South acceptance. .

“The heroes of this whole thing are the governors of Borno, Nasarawa and Gombe who, although coming from the North, argue that the South VP is right for the bill. Kaduna Governor has the same view but did not appear in Villa this week. He was represented by his deputy in a meeting with the President on Tuesday.”

The source said some governors initially insisted that the party’s Presidency should be located in the North because the opposition was based on former Deputy President Atiku Abubakar at their meeting.

“It simply came to our notice then. Some rulers wanted a Northern candidate to challenge the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), but some northern rulers rejected it. They said it was okay for power to return to the South. ”

The source noted, “The governors represented different interests in the meeting and all wanted a candidate but there were many rulers who were loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari and wanted to retaliate against the President.

“It was some who insisted that Mr VP was the most famous person based on the feedback the governors received from their constituents and that they were confident and very confident that he would defeat the candidates of other parties including Atiku.

According to an aide to one of the governors at the meeting, certain officials were asked to contact those who wished to persuade them to resign.

“It has been a very difficult call as some of the leaders have been asked to contact the candidates and explain the nomination process and tell them to lower their ambitions so that the party can unite in the conference.

“Some officials have not been able to negotiate an agreement with the candidates, fearing that the candidate will reject the proposal instead, they will go to the polls and lose rather than support the candidate.

Other media reports say that less than six governors have appealed the decision of the governors to Prof Osinbajo.

A source at Aso Villa said at least three governors visited the Deputy President in his office.

“The governors have high hopes that the Deputy President will bring in the necessary votes to win the 2023 election but more importantly the party remains united because we have the Osun and Ekiti elections in the corner and we will work together to win that election. As we prepare for the 2023 elections.

It will be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to the authorities to allow him to nominate a successor.

At a meeting on Tuesday with APC national chairman Abdullah Adamu, Buhari said, “In line with the party’s internal policies and as we approach the conference in a few days, to be elected to the office of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2023. ”

“I would like to assure you that the consultation process will continue to ensure that all potential participants and stakeholders will attend the conference. This will also ensure that any concerns raised by the various issues are manageable and that our team looks strong,” Buhari said.
