A 4th grade student who died calling 911 to help his classmates during a shooting at a Texas school has been arrested.
The funeral of 10-year-old Amerie Jo Garza was on Tuesday, May 31st.
Loved ones and community members gathered at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Uvalde to remember Amerie.
My heart aches for everyone in this city, ”said relative Jysenia Garcia outside the church.
“If you know the families of the children who lost their children and the family of the shooter, you don’t know where to put your heart,” Garcia added.
“We’ve been laughing in our house since the shooting, but then we look at each other guilty. I feel guilty for smiling. I even felt guilty for putting on makeup at the funeral. I don’t know why. I just did that.”
Amerie, who called 911 for help at Robb Elementary School when she was shot, had just turned 10 years old before she died.
Photographs from his funeral show mourners packed the Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery where his body was buried on May 31, 2022.
On Tuesday and May 31, the family of another 10-year-old shooting victim Maite Yuleana Rodriguez buried her in the Rushing-Estes-Knowles Chapel in Uvalde.
Three more Tuesday vigils for other victims, including teacher Irma Garcia, 46, and students Nevaeh Bravo and Jose Flores.
