One killed, many injured as explosion rocks another Kogi community during masquerade festival

One person has been pronounced dead at the scene, and several others have been injured in what is believed to be a bomb blast near the Okene Local Government area of ​​Kogi State.

The blast happened on Thursday evening, June 2, in the Idoji area of ​​Okene where the annual candy festival was taking place.

According to eyewitnesses, the bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a crowd of spectators, leaving a trail of nails on the injured legs.

One of the locals who witnessed the incident, Usman Animuko Sani, said the explosion occurred around 6pm when some people, including maskandi, gathered to celebrate the annual Echeane festival in Okene.

Sani, who disclosed that the explosion had affected many locals, said an unnamed man had lost both his legs and several others were injured.

He said one of the victims died on the way to Okengwe Hospital, where the victims were rushed to hospital for treatment.

He added that by the time they arrived at the hospital some of the dead had been transferred to Lokoja as some of the injured could not be treated by paramedics in Okengwe.

 

The latest incident took place a few weeks after two bomb blasts in the town of Kabba that claimed lives and left many people injured.

 

State police spokesman SP William Ayah confirmed that one of the victims had died at the hospital.

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Edward Egbuka had sent a police specialist to the scene to resolve the causes of the explosion.

 

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Okehi Local Government Area, Abdulraheem Ohiare, suspended the candy event following the attack.

In a statement on Friday, June 3, Ohiare urged caregivers and traditional leaders to listen to the new developments, reaffirming his commitment to a peaceful life.
